refererとreferrer

refererってWeb業界ではよく見る単語ですよね。でも、実は英語としては間違いで、技術用語なんだそうです。

Referer is a common misspelling of the word referrer. It is so common, in fact, that it made it into the official specification of HTTP – the communication protocol of the World Wide Web – and has therefore become the standard industry spelling when discussing HTTP referers.

refererはreferrerのミススペルなんだけど、HTTPの仕様になっちゃったから技術界隈では標準的なスペリングになってるよ、ってなところでしょうか。

ところが、JavaScriptを書いてるとdocument.referrerという正しい綴りに出会うことがあります。この原典はおそらくDOMの仕様でしょう。「Document Object Model (DOM) Level 2 HTML Specification」では確かにreferrerとなっています。

ミスならミスで統一してくれよ！と思うのは僕だけでしょうか。DOMの制定の方が後のはずですから、きっと「ミススペルを採用したら仕様策定者の俺がバカみたいじゃないか、だから正しい綴りにするぞ」みたいな思惑が働いたんだと妄想しています。実際のところどうなんでしょうね？
